Other New Projects

Just as I gleefully began my sweater of joy, I realized that Christmas is coming, and, perhaps, I should think of some gifts. Over the last two years I knit all my kid cousins (most of my cousins are significantly younger than I) stuffed animals for Christmas and birthdays. This year I've decided to go for socks for my aunts (If you know any of my aunts, ssssh!). It's a good thing I have a relatively small family. Here are pics of my progress of the first sock.

My sister had a request for a "burnt orange beanie with a brim." Here is my offering. The top has a kind of swirly starfish shape in it. The hat is my own design, the footies come from "One Skein" by Leigh Radford (many jems in this one, I recommend it).

You are amazing! How the heck do you find time to knit?! Every time Adrik takes a nap, and I think about digging out my knitting bag and the beautiful brown llamma wool that is tucked inside, I look around the house and see a million other things that need to be done -- like dishes and laundry! :) You are an excellent craftswoman too. I am very impressed. I saw the little mouse hat you made -- soo cute!!!!! :)

Thank you for your compliments...they mean a lot to me (especially from an artist such as yourself!). How do I find the time? I knit while riding in the car (obviously when I am not driving, but I have heard stories...) while Lily nurses (which can be as often as every two or three hours--lots of knitting or reading time there; I'd best enjoy it now, when there are two kids I'm sure things like that will not fly), or has tummy time, or on the occasion that we watch a movie or TV. Luckily for me, Tiger is VERY supportive of my creativity in all its forms, and he encourages me to take time for my arts--he is even learning to knit socks right now! I just always have it with me, so if someone else is fawning over Lily, there's my chance. Plus, I usually have a "it will get done eventually" attitude towards housework. If I had to work full time on top of house and mom duties, much less of everything, especially knitting, would get done. I tip my hat to you, and to all the working moms out there who, in my opinion, have two full-time jobs.

Ok, the long and short of it is: Knitting is something I try to do while I'm doing something else. That's why the blanket for my Brother-in-law took so long; I picked a pattern that was so complex that I couldn't do anything else while I knit--it had to be my one focus. I've just been knitting for many years (I learned when I was 6) and know I can knit and read/watch TV/talk/walk etc. So that's how I find time to knit. I am always doing it as a secondary activity.

Great Hat-that is so your sister.
I just learned yesterday how to do cables and am currently making up a glove pattern... do you have any cute not extremely boring scarf patterns?

Seeing you in action today gives me a little hope that one day I may be able to knit *something* other than a scarf or dishtowel. ;)

I see you're reading Nickel & Dimed! I loved that book. How did you happen to run across it and are you liking it?

Now I'm doubly impressed...to create such beautiful work while at the same time breastfeeding! (A man could never do that.)

e. -- check out "one skein" it has some good patterns. or a stitch book...i made a cute scarf from a leaf pattern and i staggered the leaves.

anna--my book club is reading it. so far (i'm only on chapter 3) i am enjoying it greatly, and trying not to get depressed by it. it is also making me greatful for my up-bringing and current situation in life.

opal--you are right, a man couldn't do that ;-p
sometimes, when i have about 30 things in my arms, and someone says, "can you get that?" I reply, "I'm a mom. I am Superwoman."

Okay. So after talking to you, I was convinced I could do those lovely socks you made from "One Skein." Ummm...I don't know how to do cables! It's a lonely feeling.

I'm sure I'll get over it. Rockin' hat, by the way! Let's talk soon. I just got over the flu so expect a call!
